The new PRS John Mayer Silver Sky is loosely based on two guitars - 'vintage instruments' from 1963 and 1964, which we can assume with some level of certainity are Fender Strats. Paul Reed Smith and John Mayer have worked closely together to combine all their favourite features from these guitars, with the modern practices and production methods of PRS. The pickups are based on the single coils from 1963-64 so they'll have a vintage sound, though PRS have mellowed out the high frequencies a touch so they're never brash, or harsh sounding - expect musical, warm, rounded tones. These new 635JM pickups have also been created so that in positions one, three and five, there's a greater difference between the guitar's output and the single coil hum - in other words, you'll notice unwanted noise less.

The neck profile is, yep, you guessed it - based on those 63 and 64 guitars, but made with modern PRS neck design technology. That 7.25" fretboard radius will also give the guitar a nice, vintage feel. The Silver Sky uses slightly smaller frets compared to what you'd normally find on a PRS electric - as they use on their acoustics, though still a touch bigger than vintage frets. It's worth noting that, unlike other PRS electrics with trems, the new John Mayer signature will come with the trem flush to the body, so there's more contact. Acoustically, you'll get a touch more volume which also helps with the signal to noise ratio. Whilst the trem system is essentially a classic design, it's been tweaked with an unthreaded PRS arm (which you can customise the feel of), and the use of Gen III knife-edge screws.

Other things you might notice about the PRS John Mayer Silver Sky is the slight contour on the lower cutaway, and the reverse PRS headstock. They've also altered the design of the jack input slightly, to make plugging and unplugging your lead easier, and quicker to do. The PRS Silver Sky John Mayer signature is available in four finishes - Tungsten, Onyx, Frost and Horizon. The first 500 made (125 coming into Europe) will also come shipped in a commemorative hardcase, thereafter, they'll come in a newly designed padded gigbag. The First Editions are due to ship towards the end of this month so we should see them not too long after. Act quick!
