PRS Silver Sky? More John Mayer Guitar Speculation!

by Richard Blenkinsop. Posted on 2017-11-27 11:05:20

I'm sure a great many of you John Mayer nuts out there have noticed that on this year's Search For Everything tour, he's been using a silver, Strat-esque PRS guitar. It looks a little like the old PRS DC3, but a bit more Strat-like. It's got three single coils, what looks like a 5-way switch, three knobs, 22 frets, rosewood (presumably), plus a slight contour on the lower horn. Here are two prototypes that Mayer featured on his Instagram stories.

It's also probably worth noting that PRS have registered the trademark 'Silver Sky'. Now, just to itterate; we haven't been told anything about a potential PRS Silver Sky, or any new John Mayer signature guitar - this is purely speculation.

Both the John Mayer Super Eagle guitars were made in very limited numbers, so if this double cut silver guitar is made into a production model, it could go either the same way as those, or, perhaps be made as a slightly less wallet-punishing Core line model - perhaps even like the CE guitars?? It could however, remain just what it is at the moment - a few instruments made specially for one of the biggest names in guitar pop. Here he is at the o2 earlier this year, using one of his Strat-shaped PRS prototypes:

If you're really into crafting a Mayer tone, look no further than the new PRS J-MOD amp, used both on his solo project and with Dead & Company.
