X Factor Using Yamaha Clavinovas

For those watching this year's X Factor, you may have noticed the shiny black piano sitting proud, front and centre of stage. This is actually a Yamaha Clavinova - a digital piano. This means that the instrument never needs tuning, as all the sound comes from samples. You can also adjust the volume, or plug it into an amp or PA, plus you've got other sounds such as strings, organ, brass etc, as well as recording and learning facilities.

The model they're using looks like a Yamaha Clavinova CVP709 in Polished Ebony. This is a wonderfully versatile instrument boasting over 1000 voices, and studio quality effects. You can plug a microphone into the piano and hear yourself through the on-board speaker system and even get it to produce vocal harmonies in real time. If you fancy playing with other musicians but there are none around, the Yamaha CVPs allow you to call up virtual musicians that follow your chords and dynamics. The feel is also very authentic so if you're used to playing an acoustic piano, it's not going to feel wildly different.

We're keeping a keen eye on the X Factor this year, as Blackburn's very own Grace Davies is currently smashing it with her own self-penned material. Here she is playing her original song Don't Go, on the Yamaha CVP709.
