What Jim Dunlop say....
This device has found its way into many of Eddie Van Halen's recordings, adding a shimmery velocity to lead passages or a more dramatic swoosh to muted strumming. Not just for guitars; it works well with bass, keyboards and even vocals. Vary the speed from a subtle, long cycle to a fast, watery warble...and myriad vintage vibrations in between.
While the Phase 90's presence on some of the Van Halen records is significant, a huge number of artists have been using it, including: Josh Homme, Jerry Cantrell, Lenny Kravitz and Bullet For My Valentine.
What Reidys think:
The Phase 90 has been a favourite on many players' boards for decades and it's no wonder; it produces a rich, warm analogue tone and its range encompasses subtle and extreme phase sounds. Like all of the MXR pedals, it is sturdy in construction and reliable.
How to use the MXR Phase 90:
To set up the Phase 90, plug your instrument into the Input jack and your amplifier into the
Output jack. Turn it on with the footswitch toggle, making sure the red LED is ON to indicate that
the effect is active. For lead guitar, the Phase 90’s sound is most effective when it’s used
sparingly. Playing “clean” through most of a tune, then popping it on for a solo, makes the effect
especially noticeable by contrast. You can try adjusting the speed to synchronize with the tempo
of the song, but most players find that it’s more interesting let the phase effect have a unique
tempo all its own. Experiment with tempos and see how they affect the emotional impact of your
For rhythm guitar, the Phase 90 works best with slower speed rates, giving an “undulating”
character to chord strumming or arpeggios.
Phase 90’s are prized in the recording studio because of their high tone quality and reliability.
One great studio trick is to record your track clean, then patch the Phase 90 in between the clean,
pre-recorded track and a new scratch track. You can then adjust the Speed knob in post-production,
varying the rate for different parts of the song, and add interest and depth
to the effect.
