So, you want a USA built Gibson Les Paul. You want a pair of incredible 490 rhythm and treble pickups that are articulate and versatile. You want an inviting, comfortable rounded neck that is the perfect depth and width. You want a proper Mahogany body with a bit of weight relieving to take the physical strain out of gigging for two hours. You probably think these are the ingredients of an instrument that will set you back multiple thousands of British pounds. However, this is where Gibson have dazzled us with perhaps the best magic trick ever witnessed: the USA Les Paul Tribute. A USA Gibson with a price tag below £1000. How is this possible?
Gibson Les Pauls are an expensive instrument to build. They're constructed of premium materials and are finished with detail and precision using techniques which take patience, skill and expertise. One such example is the application of a coat of gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. Nitrocellulose is a tricky substance to work with: it's temperamental and fussy and the job of finishing a guitar with it is a nightmare. Next is the binding. Binding takes a steady hand and an incredible amount of time to properly execute. What do all these processes do? They increase the build time and increase the cost of the guitar. So, by removing these processes, the guitar can be sold at a lower price point.
This is how the Les Paul Tribute is made possible. It does away with the superfluous, visual appointments and retains only the features which influence the tone and playability of the guitar. A flamed top, nitrocellulose lacquer and binding do look stunning, but they don't do this. The Tribute is for the player who loves everything that a Les Paul has to offer but isn't interested in the decorative visuals. This, then, with the weight relieved body to maximise playing comfort, is the ultimate Les Paul for gigging and beating up. It's the most sturdy workhorse in the stable.
