What Reidys say...

This violin is constructed from selected, traditional tonewoods boasting a hand carved solid spruce top and figured maple back and sides and is beautifully finished using amber-brown vanish giving it a very elegant antique aesthetic. The choice of violin tonewoods has not changed much since the days of Stradivarius and this is where the instruments sweetness, response and clarity of tone comes from. Where this violin sets itself apart from other cheaper models is in the quality of the craftsmanship and the materials evident in the beautifully figured back and sides.

The Concertante violin comes with a fitted Aubert maple bridge. Aubert bridges are made to exacting standards with great attention to detail. Only the highest quality maple is used and with over 100 years experience Aubert have established a know how and a guarantee of quality. The rest of the fittings are Ebony which is a very desirable feature. In comparison to rosewood or boxwood which are also used in violin pegs Ebony is the densest and hardest meaning that ebony tuning pegs are more resistant to compression when under pressure in the peg box. This also means that the fingerboard is much less prone to indentation when you press the strings against it. In a nut shell Ebony lasts much longer than other materials and, like a tuxedo, always looks classy.

There are a few extras which you may want to consider whilst purchasing this violin, we'll explain a few of the different accessories and explain why.

Strings - Which string are right for your violin?

The truth is every violin reacts differently to the type of strings you use and the preferences of the player and the style of music will always affect this decision.

The strings that we recommend for violins in this price are Dominant
. Probably the most popular strings in the world, these strings are the default choice for students and professionals alike.

In contrast to cheaper brands Dominant strings have a synthetic, multi-strand core giving the strings increased flexibility and a fantastic tonal warmth that is rich in overtones. This elegant design also makes them impervious to changes in humidity allowing for stable intonation and a much longer life.

These strings really do make all the difference and will transform the tone of any student violin with factory fitted strings into a beautifully resonant, sweet sound that all players aspire to.

Rosin - what is this magical cake?

Rosin is a solid form of concentrated pine tree resin that is extracted, purified and then mixed with oils and other additives to give it the necessary characteristics for use on stringed instruments. When the rosin is rubbed onto the bow hair it sticks to the rough surface and helps the bow grip when it is drawn across the strings, allowing them to ring clearly. Violins, cellos and basses all require different grades of rosin. Generally speaking violins need harder, dryer rosin while cello and bass rosin is generally much softer.

To accompany this instrument we would recommend considering Pirastro Gold or Goldflex rosins which have been specially formulated to allow for precise bowing, less dust and improved grip on the strings compared with lesser quality rosins. Pirastro Goldflex contains small peices of gold that allow for an extra smooth response and give a bright, warm tone.

A Violin bought from Reidys Home of Music will always be set up correctly and ready to play. It is this attention to detail that makes all the difference.
